What you see and what you don’t see in success, meditation is the same! The Iceberg Illusion of SUCCESS!

The iceberg illusion via Matthew Syed illustrated by Sylvia Duckworth

Our insight: What people see is what most people want. What people don’t see is what most people don’t want. That’s why most people do not have the kind of success. Most people think meditation is just to relax and do not do anything, but what they do not think of are exactly the same requirements as below the iceberg.

Anthropocene is becoming more and more important as the balance shifts more and more towards the human side of the nature-human spectrum. The whole environment(nature)-system(human) Yin-Yang relationship has reversed to become a system(nature)-environment(human) Yin-Yang relationship.

In this Anthropocene age, determination of the sustainable balancing point is one of the challenging tasks. The interaction between different systems forms the balancing point between any one of the systems and its corresponding environment. Each system holds onto its own perspectives (rights and freedom) and at the same time adapts (respect and obey) to the perspectives of other systems. Therefore, it is about the balance between the nature-human Yin spectrum and the adaptation-freedom Yang spectrum.

Human would naturally pursue for the freedom side of the Yang spectrum, however, this will push the Yin spectrum to the human side developing a very imbalanced system. Such system would get into a turbulent stage before the balancing point between new systems and environments is settled, which could be disastrous to human.
The balance between the two spectrums would mean certain sacrifice to the freedom of human. However, would there be another way out of this sacrifice? Human take nature for granted but without fully understanding the sub-systems in nature on which we have been relying. However, could human develop the knowledge and wisdom to re-create a nature that would support the survival of our physical body and at the same time satisfy the unlimited needs for freedom by human? This is the second challenge in this Anthropocene age, Governing the Anthropocene.

In this workshop we will start from the system basics of the Taichi Yin-Yang system theory in Traditional Chinese Medicine, and the Five systems theory in the teaching of Buddha, with a view to gradually building up the systemic views to understand and analyze the Governing of Anthropocene.

The systemic thinking of the unification of nature and man has been the fundamental concept in traditional Chinese culture since around 500BC. The concept is also embedded in the teaching of Confucianism, Buddhism, Taoism, and Traditional Chinese Medicine. The traditional Chinese system theories under investigation include the Taichi yin-yang system theory, the Five systems theory of the human mind, and the Traditional Chinese Medicine differential diagnosis-cure process. These theories are found to be related to different modern system theories compared including Viable system model.

Taichi yin-yang system theory describes the relationship between any two entities (element/process) at any level of interest. It concerns the quantitative and qualitative changes between the entities. This is related to causal loop diagram (CLD) in system dynamics which uses reinforcing loop and balancing loop. The observer is not specified in the theories, but the perspectives of the observer actually determine the entities, the unit of quantitative changes, and the ratio of qualitative changes.

The Five systems theory of the human mind is one of the important concepts developed in the teaching of Buddha. The Five systems are: awareness, perspective, sensation, action and physical object. These five systems are able to describe the properties of the observer and the decision maker.

The Traditional Chinese Medicine differential diagnosis-cure process is a practical systemic process that has been used daily for more than 2000 years. It is believed that the whole macroscopic-microscopic spectrum of systems is suitable. The system state identification involves three pairs of direction-forming spectrums. The Superficial and Internal spectrum gathers information between the boundary and the system. The Cold and Hot spectrum gathers information between the form and function, or matter and energy within the system. The Deficient and Excess spectrum gathers information between the environment and the system. Strategy can then be formulated to regulate and maintain the system.

The System and Control Theory in the Vipassana Meditation of the Noble Eightfold Path as taught by Buddha – Understanding Meditation with the Taichi Yin-Yang System in Modern Terminologies.

Full paper

Abstract:The theory in the Vipassana Noble Eightfold meditation technique of Buddha is believedto be the Theory of Everything. However, Chinese believed that the Taichi Yin-Yangtheory is the Theory of the Universe. Albert Einstein and Richard Feynman believed inthe unity of all the equations and theories of physics to explain the nature. Could they bethe different truth of the universe? Or they are all the truth of the universe but onlyillustrated in different terminologies? It is believed that the latter one is the case. Thelinks between these theories are illustrated in this paper using modern system and controltheories. The evolution of science gave birth to our modern materialistic world. Does thismaterialism contradict with our spirituality? It is believed that both of them follow theTheory of Everything. All the contradictions arise only because of human beings, whotried to control and manipulate the universe to suit their frame of reference involvingcravings, aversions and ignorance. The practice of Vipassana meditation allows us torealize the union of materialism and spirituality, because Vipassana helps us to acquirethe ultimate wisdom, to be the master of our own mind, and to be able to make decisionsbase not on emotions but on compassion.Buddha explained the theory of our universe but said that the ultimate truth cannot be1The System Theory in the Vipassana Meditation of Buddhaexplained in the words and concepts that we use to communicate. Our common senses arebased on pattern differentiation. Our communications are based on languages. And thefundamental of all languages are mathematical logic, set theory, and Taichi Yin-Yangsystem theory, which all are again based on differentiation. Buddha said that the ultimatetruth is without differentiation, which is beyond our common senses and ourcommunication abilities. However, Buddha taught a method for everyone of us toexperience the ultimate truth ourselves. The beauty of this method is that it is simple, practical and realistic, involving no sectarianism, no imagination and no super-naturalpower. The method is similar to a virus cleaning program that will eliminates all theimpurities within our mind, allowing us to experience the ultimate truth. Even though theultimate truth cannot be explained in words, the Vipassana method itself is within ourbasic concepts and hence can be explained in terms of system and control theories. The Taichi, boundary, of this system is the “purification of my mind”. According to theTaichi Yin-Yang theory, the Yin-Yang combo will be formed in different parts of thesystem namely the internal part, and the superficial part which acts as the interfacebetween the internal and the external of the system. Research reveals that the internal Yincomponent of Vipassana method is equanimity, the balance of the mind, and the Yangcomponent is our awareness. The superficial Yin component is wisdom and the Yangcomponent is compassion. Our goal of regulation is to keep both parts of this systemworking within the balanced range of the Cold-Hot and Deficiency-Excess spectrum. The preparation stage of Vipassana meditation is Anapana meditation, the concentrationof the mind through the observation of the breath. Research shows that the techniquerequires the observer to fix the frame of reference on the entrance of the nose. Thenobserve the flow of air during breathing in and breathing out. However, only the polarityof the first derivative of the flow of air at this moment is observed. That is, whether thebreath is coming in or going out at this moment. The value of the derivative, the secondand higher derivatives, the memory of the past moments, or the prediction of the comingmoments should all be ignored. This paper will demonstrate our research of the Vipassana meditation technique as taughtby S.N. Goenka globally nowadays, in terms of the Taichi Yin-Yang system theorywhich is now structured in terms of modern system and control theories with ourresearch. Keywords: Control Theory, Differentiation & Integration, System Theory, Spiritualityand systems, The Taichi Yin-Yang system, The Four Noble Truths, Vipassana NobleEightfold Path of Buddha, Dhamma, The Theory of Everything, Vipassana Meditation AsTaught By S.N.
